The Rock Harbor City Coroner’s Office is located in the basement of Mass Bay Hospital on the east side of the city. Mass Bay is one of two hospitals in the city, the other being Rock Harbor Memorial located on the lower south side.

Mass Bay was the easy choice when the city planners were deciding where to fund the morgue. The most common saying in regards to Memorial is that it’s where ‘healthy people go to die’.

We took two cars and they were directly behind me when I pulled around to the back of the hospital and stopped at the security booth. The guard on duty was an ex cop and former classmate of my brother’s back in high school, named Mark Sweeney.

Mark was an affable guy who always had a smile on his face and a pint of vodka in close proximity. He’d been off the job for several years now and worked full time on the hospital’s private security force. Mark had been a good cop back in the day but opted for early retirement after being injured on the job.

He’d started out as a patrolman and worked his way through the ranks to detective after only six years. He was a hard charger, always first through the door and ready for anything. When the opportunity came to work in the Narcotics Unit he jumped at the chance. He quickly established himself as one of the top undercover officers in the city, making countless arrests of both small time and mid level drug dealers.

It was during a routine first time buy on a mid level dealer that things went horribly wrong for Mark and ended his career. It was supposed to be a simple meet and greet purchase, meant to establish a relationship with the target. Over time the buys would increase in quantity and frequency, building a chain of evidence that would be impossible to deny. This was something he had done countless times before.

The dealer had an unexpected visitor drop by during this first transaction with Mark, which normally would not have been a big problem. Drug dealers have a nearly constant stream of traffic looking to score at all times of the day and night. Unfortunately this visitor was fresh out of a three year bid in Plymouth House of Corrections after being arrested by Mark in a similar sting. He immediately recognized and called him out in front of everyone.

Criminals in most cities would have ditched and made for a quick escape in that situation. But they weren’t in most cities, they were in Rock Harbor, and in Rock Harbor things are very different.

I guess they figured he had backup and they were going to jail anyway. Maybe they thought he was alone and they could get away with it. More than likely they didn’t think about anything. They were just a couple of violent ass holes living in no man’s land without fear and nothing to lose.

No matter what the reason was they didn’t run, they stood their ground and attacked.
